How to Care for Hearing Aid Device

Hearing aids help amplify sound through a three-part system – a microphone, an amplifier, and a speaker. This crucial and delicate equipment is invaluable to people with hearing loss. People who want to keep their hearing aids in working order longer must care for them properly. Here are some tips on how to do that.

Avoid Condensation and Moisture

The inner circuitry of any kind of hearing aid needs to be kept completely dry. Hearing aids will work better if you keep them away from moisture and condensation. This rules out having a shower, swimming, or soaking in a tub while wearing a hearing aid. It’s best to remove and keep them in the bedroom rather than the bathroom so that they aren’t affected by the condensation from a steamy shower. If someone with hearing aids is out in the rain, they should make sure they’re wearing a hat or hood or use an umbrella.

Use a Hearing Aid Dehumidifier

Placing hearing aids in a dehumidifier overnight will draw moisture out and keep the electrical components dry. This will prevent rust and ensure that they work at maximum effectiveness during the day.

Clean Battery Contacts

When changing a hearing aid battery, run a soft cloth gently over the contacts. This prevents corrosion and ensures a longer battery life. Some people also use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean battery contacts.

Make a Habit of Cleaning Your Hearing Aid After Use

Doctors advise that patients wipe down their hearing aids every night with a soft cloth, focusing on the ear molds and the dials on the body. This prevents grease and dust from building up around the tubing. Patients can also use a small probe-like brush to dislodge wax from hard-to-reach portals.

Never Spray Aerosol Products Near a Hearing Aid

The spray makes its way into the body of the hearing aid and causes corrosion.

Use a Special Container to Store Them when You’re out Of the House

Don’t wrap your hearing aids in a paper napkin and stuff them in a pocket or in the bottom of a bag. A brightly colored container will keep them safe and lint-free.
