Home Improvement: When Is the Ideal Time?

When it comes to large-scale, time-intensive home improvements and renovations, timing and planning are both crucial steps to consider. The total cost of the project and your work schedule also come into play. However, the season you plan to undertake your home improvement project is the most important decision you’ll make and can set the tone for how the project goes. Here are the pros and cons of each season to help you plan your next big home improvement project.

Spring

On the one hand, spring has the most temperate weather, and homeowners can take advantage of the pleasant days. On the other hand, it’s also the busiest season, and contractors will be booked solid, and materials will be harder to source. If you must make your home improvements in the spring, make sure you start planning in the late fall and get in touch with your contractor.

Summer

Summer, or any time between May and August, is the peak home renovation season. Schools are out, and some people have even gotten back from their vacation. However, high humidity levels could hamper painting jobs, and contractors may be hard to find, but if you plan ahead, buy your materials and book a contractor in the winter, you should be golden.

Fall

Most people consider early fall the best time to renovate. You can begin outdoor projects before the weather gets too frosty and have most of your renovations ready in time for the holidays. Materials are more affordable and easily available too. You can also get extremely lucky with getting a contractor on short notice. However, depending on where you live, fall might also be too cold to begin an outdoor project.

Winter

Winter gets a bad rap when it comes to timing home renovations, but don’t write it off just yet. Indoor projects are best done during the winter when there’s a renovation lull. You’ll be able to get hold of a good contractor who will devote almost all his attention and time to your project. It’s also a good time to complete a construction project that you began early in the year.

Whichever season you choose, remember to plan ahead, get estimates, and secure financing before you get started.
